Can't you just get some plastic containers and plant stuff at your place? Even a balcony at an upstairs apartment will do if you have at least half a days sun.

John,

What's goin on with you these days? Still living at home in TX? Or have you set out and found community somewhere?

hey, John;

Sounds like you're getting a great education on food production and just how hard it can be! It isn't bad luck; it's ALWAYS about that difficult.
That's why, without tractors, pesticides, herbicides, chemical fertilizers, expensive fencing, and on & on...food production takes MANY hands and HARD work---and that's as it should be. Only 100 years ago, over 70% of all Americans were engaged in farming and ranching. Mostly small, family farms, and they formed the backbone of our democracy, because they were stakeholders, property-owners, middle-class, even though hard-working and sometimes poor.
That's why the Powers That Be, the first thing they set out to destroy was that independent-minded, strong, hard-working and capable middle-class. First they made 'em dependent on cash, not subsistence; and then they offerred more & more industrial products to "increase productivity", and "financial tools" as they say today, like the lay-a-way and installment credit plans. Then, the compulsory universal education system...now a tool for propaganda and dumbing-down and instilling conformity. Finally, corporate ownership of farms, not any loinger just the processors and meat-packers, replaced the families...or made them into corporate entities, too. And then now, we have GATT & NAFTA and other "free trade" pacts, guaranteed to allow unlimited purchases of the cheapest "food" from anywhere in the world, incl. corporate-owned plantation colonies like about all of Mexico, central America, and most (but thankfully NOT all) of South America. This forces what's left of the American farmers to produce ever-cheaper, until we're competing with virtual slave or prisoner labor. Talk about "the race to the bottom"!
Soon enough, all this horrific way of meeting people's food needs (poorly!) will crash, as the other factors necessary for AGRIBIZ to even exist, let alone acheive dominance, will disappear. Those are: CHEAP Oil, and CHEAP labor from abroad.
The former, because it's running out because of our encouraged over-consumption and because it's a finite resource, and geologically rare at that; and the latter, because the movement of cheap labor largely depends on cheap oil, and because people here will eventually demand the jobs that are available here, because we won't be earning that much higher wages any more, so we can shrug off unpleasant and physically hard work.
So what'll be left? We will return to subsistence farming, where only when we have produced enough for our families, on diversified farms, will we be willing to sell for money, the surplus. And that will eventually heal our broken economy, democracy (if we INSIST!) and God willing, our fragile environment and our beloved Earth.
You could not possibly be learning a more important, and honorable, skill.

All our best to you bro', ---- Ben & Linda

hey brutha John!
What an excellent thing for you to be doing, gardening & sharing! NOW is the time to learn how to grow food for sure, and it definitely DOES take time to learn...same thing here, Linda is workin hard getting in the starts in the warm room, when they get big enough, out they go to the garden. Our coldframes / greenhouse went down with the snow load on the roof(s) this last winter, so we hafta resurrect 'em both.
We are also making a MUCH expanded deer-fenced area, and plowing 20 acres down on old alfalfa on the leased 40 aces south of the home place, to plant grain in this year. Next year, we'll plant a grain crop, too, but will under-sow it with new alfalfa and maybe timothy hay mixed.
Two calves born so far this year, maybe 16 lambs, and the one foal that is due will show up in early May.
NO shortage of work to do! All that, and that's not even talking about the mechanical, electrical / alternative energy system rejuvenation, and new building projects, too.
Lotsa inquiries and interest from people wanting to join us. Remains to be sen how many actually will end up here, though.

Peace and easy smiling ways be upon you and your Mom, Jon. Blessings!

Hey friend John,

Sounds like your mind is definitely staying active! Yeah...the economy built on quicksand is sinking fast. We knew it would happen. I'm actually kinda surprised it didn't happen sooner.
This is necessary to get back our freedom, but that's not how it's planned for us. BUT we have the power to shape our own destinies. All we have to do is wake up and USE it; not by violence but just by living like it never OCCURRED to us to be any other way BUT free---know what I mean?
The times when people used to barter for their needs weren't all that long ago. My grandparents did a lot of that back in the 1930s, last time around. We did a lot of that, plus just GIFTing, in the '60s, too. It felt good! The money trip is not only meaningless, it's wierd because it puts us all in these phony roles relative to each other. It takes clarity to see through the "employer-employee" dance, for example.
Maybe we'll be better off. The way I figure it, we're in for a rather rough ride, but if we stay clear and remember to love each other through all our disguises, then we'll all be alright.
Shouldn't be too much different than the Great Depression here for awhile. What we have now is falling prices, because nobody has any dollars. Next phase---But then the Fed will have no choice, no "weapon" left in its bag of tricks, but the printing press---they'll print barrel-loads of scrip-bucks, and THEN we'll go into something like the German Weimar Republic of the 1920s, where it took a wheelbarrow of a billion Deutschmarks to buy a loaf of bread. Hyper-inflation, it's called.
If we get together, find and build communities NOW, it'll be better for those in them...than for those trying to stay warm out on the streets alone. Together, we have enough. Maybe NO money---but saving seeds, working hard, we can feed & shelter each other anyway, money or not.
The old Chinese "curse"---"May you live in 'interesting' times".
Keep on keepin the faith. "Love everybody, and make them your friend", as an old group called the Moody Blues once sang.
I'm glad to hear you say that you don't wanta leave under a cloud, make anyone else feel bad, and don't want any bad "mojo" following you. You are wise.
Stay happy! love & Light to you, ---- Ben

hi john,

yeah, I've just mostly been working. Keepin fires going, trying to save on the propane. We have two buildings needing heat, and they're empty. no people, I need to find renters I guess. Can't drain the buildings down as there are plumbing & plant-starting cold-frame issues involved. Can't afford to NOT heat, but neither can I afford TO heat 'em...except with good ol' firewood, so there ya go. Money is extremely tight now.

Expecting a calf to come any time from a new milk cow-to-be, a 1st-timer heifer Guernsey.

the herd of draft horses are doing well, and the cold hasn't fazed 'em any, just makes 'em shaggy...:-) it's getting warm enough, or rather we're getting used to the cold enough, to where we can start workin' them in training, round pen & ground-driving, any time now.

Wearing out the seed catalogues, planning where the different crops and all will be planted in the grtaden, and where the new deer fencing will be...that is, how much we're gonna expand the garden, esp. to include row-crops like spuds, small grains, corn.

We expect that more & more people will be contacting us, and led to us by the universe or the One, whichever you prefer. Thgere is already more & more call for housing here, both from afar and from locally. I think it's only a matter of time before food becomes very important to provide (an opportunity to grow or buy) here also.
We do hope to make market gardening, fruit & nuts, and other foods as well as the dairy, a major source of our income, along with the sawemill, more house rentals, and skidsteer & tractor work.
Maybe we'll even make a buck or two off of the horses somehow!..:-)

How are you holding up, buddy? Still keeping your patience intact? I wish you strength, I know how hard that can be, as I've said before.

Any "hippie goddesses" down there to share your life with meantime?

John... I hear your inner self crying for unity with others in this time of such change. I hear that you are more than a 16 yr old and I honor that. I, sometimes, wonder why I am here, I ponder how I make a difference and can only have acceptance of what is happening in my world. I know that sometimes we all are faced with challenges, I believe a lot of the youth of today are being given insights to what can be, you are one of those people. There WILL be a place for you when the time comes. I search for a place to belong, a place to feel "right" in. I love many aspects of this planet, yet, I know it is not my planet of origin and I miss wherever it is I came from. Yet, as I wander over this country meeting other people and reflecting myself out to others I know that this is the reality I live now. I can only imagine that a time will arrive when I WILL arrive to where IT is that I belong.

Thanks for the welcome John. Never really looked that hard at a big mac, but I did have one spew it's juices into my lap once. Had to give up on them as they were apparently crafted for neater eaters

John just read your blog and know your are hurting but I agree with Ben..this is better than just leaving. I've told you before that the runaway life is tough (not that your not tough) I've worked with homeless and runaways and they trade alot of dignity and pain for "freedom" in the early years of being on the road. check out this quick link for a simple paisley stencil, if you add your creativity it can become the trippy hippie wrap your looking for. Otherwise keep an eye out on e-bay or search web browsers, I'm sure they show up from time to time.
I feel your effort to share the love man, it's good to see. You should look into a musical instrument. I just started with hand drums and it does help with internal and external explorations in the sharing; might help if you can help during travels to mulch some of that energy into an entertainment for show. Get everybody dancing ya know. An acoustic guitar would be a good instrument to start with too, easier to form bands from if you find a few friends you can play well with.

I should add too, the John Brown book I would recommend starting with is called 'Tracker'
