Ok, I said I would describe more about what I'm doing, so here goes.
I have a couple rural acres in Holmes County, Ohio. It is in a very isolated area for Ohio. The property is on a well kept paved road and is a minimum of 8 miles to any convenience like gas, food etc. Nearest real town is 17 miles. The property is situated on a small hill, above any flood plains. Gently rolling so all the land is useable.
On the land is set ups for 2 mobile homes with 2 seperate septic systems, a shared well with WONDERFUL water. There are mature black walnuts, sassafras, fruit trees, an established garden area and herb beds. Another neighbor volunteers delivery of manure every year.I have one 2 Bdrm/1Ba single wide on site, a small metal shed with cement floor and totally enclosed poultry fence for the chickens. In about a month I will be putting a 12'X16' hip roofed wooden 'barn' on site to convert to off grid housing for myself. I own all the previous named , debt free. NO Mortgage. One MH site is still available with elec, septic and water.
I have plans for adding an outdoor kitchen /laubndry community area that will include a wood fired bake oven, open fire pit with rotisserie, swing out grill, pot rack and hooks; a work table including dish wash station and laundry tubs; storage box for canning and preserving equipt ( already purchased) . We will be working on a new idea I have for a larger solar oven The plans for this area is to enable food preservation in the outdoors to not build up heat indoors in the summer, enable off grid hand laundry, line drying with scrub board, boiling pot and hand crank wringer. We plan to add a small ( Nigerian Dwarf) dairy goat herd soon.
This place is within 2 miles of a major river, many small ponds/lakes for good fishing. We have huge deer herds, wild turkey and other game seen regularly from the backdoor. We have many Amish neighbors. One has a small feed store and lumber mill about 1 mile away. He has offered me his slab wood to burn for free if I haul it. There are many corn, soybean and wheat and oat fields that I plan to ask for gleaning rights to. By hand picking their waste we can get the goats and chicken feed for the labor. This is so easy the kids can even help.
For experience: I raised 5 healthy, free thinking kids on a different 2 acre plot with gardens, chickens, 1 or 2 pigs we butchered per yr. I have made my kids clothes done nearly every sort of home food preservation, grind fresh flour for bread baking, have used herbal folk remedies for years, helped home birth 2 grandbabies abd can stretch a dollar til it squeals. I have homesteaded/organic gardened for 30+ years. I'm trained as a CNA and have many relative survival skills. I can shoot most guns and kill with good aim for a mercifully quick death of my target. Have slaughtered and butchered most family meat at one time. Prefer to let someone else do the heavy lifting now that I'm headed towards 60 and have a hip replacement. My place could conceivable house about 15 working members. I have ideas for individual housing using recycled campers and modifying them to use solar power, rain water collection and wood heat but those details will get worked out when someone wishes to join us and spend a couple thousand on their debt free housing that they can take with them if they leave. So far my group consists of 2 adult females, 5 children as residents, we also have 7 non resident adults that help with work and visit frequently. We have enough cats and dogs on site and would have to have a very good reason to welcome more. I can not contribute fiancially to others personal needs so members will have to have some type of income. There will be food and a place to call home and people to call family for the right folks that join us.

I went to the site you referred me to in Ohio. We are not a museum, and besides relic technology, we use and depend on many newer ones as well...just whatever seems "right", appropriate.
But, other than that difference, there IS a similarity. We have many of the same things as he does in our collection, incl. an array of horsedrawn vehicles and implements. Also we are into making a lot of things ourselves, or at least having the ability to...such as clothing, from the sheep on up. Soap, leather, and of course food for people & critters.
We are getting hit by snow, to be followed tomorrow by arctic cold. I better get back to the preps...take care. Stay high & warm!
We are doing much the same as you are planning; I think we have quite a lot in common. Tell us more about your place, please...do you have any housing in place? Got a garden space cleared and worked?
How many are with you already? Are you anywhere near Tuscarawas or Holmes County?
Tell more about your place in Ohio...ALAN
Blessings,
Royce
