Hi peaceful people. I was wondering if anyone might have some good ideas for recycled glass. I've started collecting all these glass pieces because i like to make stepping stones and mosaics with them but I'd like to find something else to do with it. Something more useful maybe. I even saw at a home show how someone used broken glass for mulch in the garden. I personally wouldn't use it for that purpose for the sake of animals and children but it's a nice idea. So I was just thinkin.

If you have any window boxes, you can put pieces of broken glass or clay pots in the bottom so that the plant roots don't sit in water.

Maybe a cool backsplash for your kitchen, or tile for a vanity in your bathroom. If you have any whole glass bottles, you can use them as flower vases, or for cooking oils and salad dressings, with a cork of course. I'm sure there are many more uses I'm missing, but those are a few.

If you're looking at building a natural home, you can use them, along with cans, to build interior walls in an earthship, a really cool, eco-friendly, self-sustaining home. Click here to learn more.

I saw a program on TV the other night where this artist used peices of glass wrapped in metal wire, hemp, etc...in her necklaces and bracelets and other jewelry peices. It was very beautiful and creative way to use peices of broken glass. Of course she smoothed the edges out first...lol. Just thought I would throw that in there.
Blessings,
Royce

Back in the day, when I used to party in the woods, we'd put empty bottles near the fire to warm up, then put in the coals... after a while they'd get hot enough to flatten and shape with sticks, then pull them out, but keep near the fire to cool slowly, and eventually you'd have a unique looking ashtray, candy dish, or whatever, depending on how you shape it... if it doesn't break while cooling.
We used many different colored bottles of various size... some came out nice.

I've played a little with glasswork like that, even traveled to the coast to check out some of chihulys' work then on to tour an art school. If you can warm up just one end of another bottle (use a newspaper for a cold end you can grab) you can stick it to a side of the the bottle and should be able to pull and stretch, ...maybe stick something in the open end and roll it over some broken pieces to build it mosaicly. I'll have to try it out one of these nights if I can make it to a campfire. Post some pictures if I can make it work :)
